When you enter Feltz Bagels on the Lower East Side, you notice that something is amiss. Namely, there are no enticing aromas of freshly baked bagels or of the platters of smoked fish arranged on counters. The reason for the lack of olfaction is simple. The contents of the store are made of 30,000 pieces of felt fabric.

“Feltz Bagels” is the latest installation of British artist Lucy Sparrow and part of her “Sew Your Soul” collection. Previous New York installations include “Lucy’s Delicatessen” and “The Convenience Store.” “Feltz Bagels,” which makes its home for now in an abandoned storefront in the East Village, will remain on display through the end of October.

Unlike most art installations, the wares found in “Feltz Bagels” are actually for sale. Custom bagels sell for $250, while pricing of the ready-made items starts at $10.
