This coming Sunday is Cinco de Mayo. If you happen to find yourself in Mexico, you can join in one of the endless celebrations of General Ignacio Zaragoza’s defeat of the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
In the more likely scenario that you wake up in your own bed in New York on May 5, you can still get in on the festivities at local restaurants and bars. Here are a couple suggestions.
Mexi, in Williamsburg, will be offering a flight of three mezcal margaritas now through May 5, so they’ll be available all weekend. This homage to the Mexican flag (nicknamed “El Tri Margarita“) uses Aldez mezcal mixed variously with cucumber, coconut, and watermelon. The trio is priced at $24. (Mexi, 149 North 9th Street, Brooklyn 646-828-3247.)
Casa Bond, in NoHo, has been noted for its occasional excesses, which include offering its guacamole with an ounce of ossetra caviar and a side of blinis. For Cinco de Mayo, however, the restaurant will embrace tradition with a menu of botanas, authentic Mexican snacks and small plates meant to be enjoyed with family and friends.
The atmosphere will likewise be more festive with a live mariachi band, raffles, and giveaways.
