Rosie O’Grady’s, a popular steakhouse that has held court at the corner of West 52nd Street and Seventh Avenue since 1973, has announced that it will close permanently on July 1. The precipitating factor in the closure is a rent dispute.

In May of 2021, a disagreement between the bar’s owner and the building’s landlord, SL Green, over rent went to an arbitration panel, which found in favor of the landlord. The rent on the property, owner Mike Carty confided to The Irish Voice, a community newspaper, was $3 million a year. Sadly, 91 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the closure, according to a state filing.

A farewell message from Carty on the restaurant’s website expresses his “deepest gratitude to all who have supported Rosie O’Grady’s … throughout our time here and would so enjoy seeing you for one last pint.” It also notes his firm resolve to reopen at a new location.
