You’ve probably noticed that Brits celebrate Christmas differently from us Yanks. For example, the standard holiday greeting in Britain is “Happy Christmas,” while on this side of the pond people wish each other a “Merry Christmas.”
Another difference is evident when it comes to the dessert course of Christmas dinner. Here, we embrace no single dedicated sweet, whereas in merry old England the universal dessert (or “pudding”) is Christmas pudding, which bears a resemblance to the much-maligned fruitcake and is also known as plum pudding or figgy pudding.
This year, the makers of the luncheon meat SPAM are offering Americans the chance to partake of this centuries-old tradition without going to the effort — which is considerable — of making your own Christmas pudding from scratch. The brand is selling a SPAM Figgy Pudding for a limited time beginning Nov. 15 at Amazon, Walmart, and SPAM. The dessert, according to the website, “brings a blend of warm spices and seasonal ingredients that will be the star in many wintertime recipe favorites. With notes of cinnamon and nutmeg combined with fig and orange flavors, you’ll taste true holiday comfort that will have you caroling all season long.”

Suffice it to say that if you dislike fruit cake, you probably won’t have much use for figgy pudding either, so you’d better have some American desserts on hand just to be safe.
IHOP, the Breakfast Cereal
If you set your watch by the latest mashup, get ready for another adjustment. IHOP, the pancake giant with more than 1,750 locations worldwide has partnered with General Mills to bring a new product to your breakfast table. Introducing IHOP Mini Pancake Cereal – Blueberry & Syrup, a surprise innovation that will appear on shelves starting this month.
According to a joint press release, “This cereal will allow guests to enjoy crunchy blueberry pancake flavor in every delicious spoonful. Each cereal box is filled with lots of itty bitty pancake-shaped pieces with natural and artificial blueberry and syrup flavor that is sure to bring a smile to your face. Share special moments with family and friends by sitting down for a tasty bowl of mini pancake cereal, pack it in bags as easy-to-carry lunch snacks, or make these tiny pancake shaped pieces your new favorite ice cream toppings.”
