The parenthetical in the headline is aimed at readers too young to recall when nearly every doorway on the block of Sixth Street between First and Second Avenues opened onto another Indian restaurant — when hungry pilgrims waited patiently in line, inhaling the intoxicating aromas of cumin and coriander that enveloped the block. Now, as I remarked in my review last September of the lone remaining restaurant, Malai Marke, the restaurant population of that once-thriving enclave is down to a single holdout.

But do I hear two? As EV Grieve noted earlier this month, “A coming soon sign for a restaurant serving Indian cuisine has arrived outside 324 E. Sixth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue… and next door to the shuttered Raj Mahal.”

A man can dream.
