Carmine’s, which is not strictly speaking a “Broadway restaurant,” clearly wants to be. Which explains its decision to get into the dinner theater game. Starting Sept. 20 and running through Oct. 5, the Times Square location of the restaurant will feature “Speakeasy, Die Softly,” a whodunnit, in its Sinatra Room.

Dinner theater arguably can succeed when the food is tied in some meaningful fashion to the action onstage — think the production of “Sweeney Todd” a few years back where audience members had the option of tucking into a savory pie at a table onstage. But “Speakeasy, Die Softly,” is likely to feel intrusive to diners, especially when they have just put away three courses of weighty southern Italian food (served family-style) plus drinks.
