Last October I reported that Sobre Masa, the popular Williamsburg staple that had developed a following for its blended heirloom corn-based tortillas, had birthed a second location in Bushwick. Known as Sobre Masa Tortilleria, the newcomer featured a brief selection of the house’s signature tacos, though its predominant role was to serve as a tortilla factory cum retail shop.
Now word has filtered down that the original Williamsburg location has permanently shuttered after a temporary hiatus. The reason cited by the owners has become the most common given during these plague years: COVID. They will now focus their time and efforts exclusively on the taqueria, which currently offers a limited selection of taco combinations, though I suspect more are on the way.
