The ink hasn’t quite dried on Taco Bell‘s last promotion (a free Breakfast Crunchwrap available through the end of June), but the fast food giant is on to its next: For a limited time, the chain is serving up a vegan version of its Crunchwrap that replaces the meat with seasoned plant-based beef and the cheese with another vegan analog.
Liz Matthews, the company’s Global Chief Food Innovation Officer, states in a press release:
Such a large part of our fandom is vegan or vegetarian, and we’re as committed to them as they are to us and our menu. That’s why we took so long, months and years, to release something this special; we wanted and needed to get it exactly right, to get it mouth-watering. Because let’s admit it, we’ve all eaten plenty of products on today’s market that don’t taste great and certainly aren’t craveable.
The sandwich is certified vegan by the American Vegetarian Association with the caveat that the restaurant doesn’t guarantee against cross-contact with non-vegan ingredients, such as the use of the same oil for frying oil.
This latest chink in the animal-protein wall is perhaps not the plant-fueled revolution we thought we were witnessing when one of the most expensive restaurants in America announced it was going vegan.
