The Metropolitan Transit Authority is about to turn 120. To commemorate the milestone, the organization is partnering with Zabar’s market to offer a host of “commuter specials” starting on Thursday, Oct. 24, and running through Sunday, Oct. 27, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The bagel and smoked fish emporium is celebrating a milestone of its own — it turns 90 this month — by serving up 90¢ coffee in their café at 80th Street and Broadway.

MTA chief customer officer Shanifah Rieara told 1010 WINS Radio, “These commuter specials are a way for both the MTA and Zabar’s to show customers we value their continued patronage and look forward to celebrating more milestones to come.”

For the remainder of the month, a bagel with a schmear will be priced at $1.20 to commemorate the subway’s birthday, while a bagel with a schmear with a coffee will be $2.90 — a nod to the cost of a subway ride. A bagel with cream cheese and lox will be $9.90, to symbolize Zabar’s 90 years.

The MTA will also distribute hundreds of Zabar’s black and white cookies to lucky subway riders at four stations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens. Best of all, the two organizations will be holding a joint social media sweepstakes, the lucky winner of which will be rewarded with a special MTAxZabar’s gift basket of goodies. The name of the winner will be announced on Oct. 27, the date of the 120th anniversary of the opening of New York City’s first underground rapid transit network, the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) subway.
