The name — Hormbles Chormbles — sounds straight out of Lewis Carroll. But what’s in a name?
The answer in this case is a nutrient-dense chocolate-like (but not, strictly speaking, chocolate) candy that is rich in amino acids, harboring as much protein (10 grams) as two eggs. It is, moreover, sugar-free, deriving its sweetness from naturally occurring sweeteners, such as Stevia, monk fruit extract, and allulose.
A 1.55-ounce bar (about the same size as a Hershey Bar) provides half as many calories as a conventional chocolate bar. The cost per bar ranges from $2.99 to $3.99.
The bars, which at present are available for sale only on the company’s website, come in four flavors — Classic Milk, Salted Fudge, Cookies & Creme, and Peanut Butter.
If you’re wondering about the 800-pound elephant in the room, it is in the 5 grams of saturated fat (25% of the Daily Value for this nutrient) found in a bar. In 2023, AppleEats reported on a breakthrough by researchers at Rutgers University, who had unlocked the secret behind low-fat chocolate. Maybe the Hormbles Chormbles people and the food scientists at Rutgers could pool their resources.
