OK, you’ve completed the first step in planning a Thanksgiving meal. You’ve bought a turkey and scoped out the rest of the menu.

Now comes the step many home meal planners dread: Selecting a wine for the main event and possibly for other courses. This entails knowing what wines are compatible with the dishes you are serving and whether a particular wine fits in with your budget.

One wine that I recommend to novices and first-time buyers is Silk & Spice. Imported from Portugal, this grape blend betrays bold flavors that perfectly complement the flavors of rich holiday dishes. The wine is rich and full on the palate, with hints of vanilla, mocha, and ripe and cooked black fruits. It has earned an impressive score of 90 (which translates to “outstanding”) from Wine Enthusiast, an industry bible. Finally, the wine has a SRP of $13.99, which makes it a sound value when rated against similar wines at this price point.

The makers of Silk & Spice have expanded their portfolio recently to include several other affordably priced blends. Included are:

  • Silk Route. An intense aroma of red fruits and light aromatic nuances of black pepper, white chocolate, and vanilla permeate this wine. It is very well balanced, harmonious and silky, easy to drink and perfect as an everyday drink.
  • Spice Road. This wine yields an expressive aroma with ripe black fruits balanced by suggestions of chocolate and spice. It is full-bodied, at once balanced and spicy on the palate.
  • White Blend. An attractive citrus yellow and slightly golden in color, this blend of three grape varieties emits intense notes of ripe peach, melon, and white flowers, balanced by a whisper of vanilla. The palate is well-rounded, with an excellent integration of American oak and a long, agreeable finish.
