I don’t know who was first to notice that the date March 14 when expressed in numbers — 3.14 — spells out the mathematical constant pi. But I’m delighted that pie lovers everywhere have decided to commemorate the date by baking — and serving — pie.
Here are a few places around town where you can get deals on pi (I mean pie) this coming Thursday.
Four and Twenty Blackbirds, based in Gowanus, Brooklyn, will observe National Pi Day with two special offers. Your choice of 8-inch pie or 10-inch pie plus a pint of ice cream from Caffè Panna, in Gramercy, will sell for $37 and $52 respectively — a $5 savings. Its name notwithstanding, The Little Pie Company will go big for National Pi Day with its dinner and dessert sampler consisting of four 5-inch pies: One three-berry, one sour cream apple walnut, and two chicken pot pies. The total cost is $59.95. Orders for pickups must be placed in advance here or through Goldbelly.
Finally, Burger King will be celebrating National Pi Day by offering Royal Perks members (enroll at BK’s website) a free slice of Hersey’s Sundae Pie with any purchase of $3.14 or more.
