It all started in March of 2023, when Döner Haus, a restaurant serving authentic German-style Döner kebab sandwiches, opened on 14th Street. Then in August of that year, a rival doner restaurant called German Doner Kebab put down roots near Penn Station promising “kebabs done right” and “the kebab of the future.”

Now the original Döner Haus has fired back, sending out word that a new kebab house will be opening this coming Friday, June 13, in Bayside, Queens.

Should the name be unfamiliar, doner (minus the umlaut) is a dish of Turkish origin, consisting of meat shaved from a vertical spit and inserted into a flatbread, much like Arab shawarma or the Greek gyro. The dish was brought by Turkish immigrants to Germany in the 1970s.

To celebrate the opening of their newest outpost, on Thursday, June 12, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Döner Haus will be offering a grand opening special of $1 döner sandwiches. The item, consisting of shards of halal beef or chicken piled high and dressed in a creamy garlic sauce, normally sells for $12.99.

Note: There will be a limit of one sandwich per customer.

Döner Haus, 40-04A Bell Boulevard, Bayside, New York.
