Despite evidence that wine production in Israel dates back as many as 10,000 years, it is only in recent decades that the country’s wines have begun commanding serious attention. A number of factors are responsible for the ascendency of Israeli wines, among them a diverse climate, a rich soil, and a deep cultural history. Blending ancient tradition with cutting-edge innovation, Israel has emerged as one of the fastest-growing winemaking regions in the world.

Part of this oenological awakening can be attributed to the establishment of the Israeli Wine Producers Association (IWPA), a consortium of some 40+ wineries that range from boutique gems to renowned estates. The IWPA’s mission is to spread the word, encouraging wine enthusiasts everywhere to explore and enjoy Israeli wines, which proudly stand alongside those of the world’s most celebrated regions.

One undeniable appeal of Israeli wines is that each shares a piece of Israel’s history, culture, and innovation. Take as a case in point the evolution of the family-owned Flam Winery, in the Judean Hills. The enterprise was established in 1998 with the singular objective of producing quality Israeli wines that best reflect the local terroir. The idea was extremely innovative for its time.

Today, Flam’s Classico — a sophisticated blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot — is one of the most prized bottles of the region, earning a 90 from American wine critic James Suckling. Other critics have lauded the wine for its complex hints of Mediterranean spices, vanilla, and cherries.

As the holiday season approaches, don’t forget Israeli wines, which bring a touch of discovery and sophistication to the table, whether you’re gathering with family, hosting friends, or looking for the perfect gift. Increasingly available at wine shops and liquor stores across the U.S., these wines are ready to make your celebrations even more memorable.
