Tomorrow is June 6, also known around these parts as National Donut Day. If you’re a creature of habit, head on over to Krispy Kreme where every day is National Donut Day. As least that’s how it feels when you consider how often the chain offers free samples of its glazed donut.

If on the other hand you’re an iconoclast, you’ll want to know about I’m Donut? [sic]. The store, located in Times Square, is the first U.S. iteration of a phenom that has already swept Japan. Its stock in trade is nama donuts. (According to the store’s website, nama means “fresh” or “raw” in Japanese, but don’t worry — your order will come fully cooked.)

But texture is not the only feature that sets I’m Donut? apart from its competitors. The fillings and flavors are also unique. The original nama donut, the sake cream, for example, is infused with dry junmai sake and garnished with a top knot of chantilly cream.

And who knows? Maybe the outfit’s savory donut sandwiches, which include a NY BLT, made with local smoked bacon, an organic egg, vine ripe tomato, house tomato mayo, and leaf lettuce on a glazed donut bun, will rekindle the donut sandwich trend.

I’m Donut?, 154 W. 45th Street.
