In a feature on notable sandwiches than ran in August (aka National Sandwich Month), we gave a thumbs up to Waterfront Ale House in Kips Bay for its French dip, which we described as a cross between the named sandwich and a cheesesteak. The presence of caramelized onions in addition to the more predictable ingredients set the sandwich apart.
Last week, the bar and restaurant closed after a quarter century, which is a pretty good run for New York. Waterfront was a local hangout, unpretentious in most of its offerings, though it offered an impressive selection of boutique beers and ales, many on tap. The fries were also great, especially the sweet potato variant.
It will be missed.
