Time was when the stretch of East Seventh Street between Second and Third Avenues teemed with Ukrainian restaurants. These were homey places that served generous portions of soul-satisfying comfort food — stuffed cabbage, borscht, the potato-and-onion stuffed dumplings called varenyky: you get the picture.
Last week, one of the last restaurants of the breed, Streecha, announced it was closing, posting on Instagram:
Dear Friends,
We are incredibly grateful for your unwavering love and support over the years.
It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce that we’ve left our current location permanently.
But, as happens from time to time in New York, that wasn’t the last word from the beloved restaurant, which noted in a subsequent post:
Our team is searching for a new partner and location to keep a traditional Ukrainian restaurant alive. We welcome input from our Streecha community.

Streecha Ukrainian Kitchen will reopen as a pop-up concept near its former longtime home at 33 E. Seventh St. between Second Avenue and Cooper Square, according to its chef, Dima Kovalenko.

One final National Hamburger Day promotion worth noting: Starting today and running through Sunday, June 2, Wendy’s customers can get a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger for 1¢ with any purchase. To qualify for the deal, you need to order in the Wendy’s app or at wendys.com.
