You’ve never heard of the Victory Cup? Join the club: Neither have we. But if the idea of watching a polo match — especially one with the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop — appeals to you, then you’ll want to claim your spot at the New York installment of the Victory Cup to be held next Saturday, Aug. 4, on Governor’s Island.
As colorful as it sounds, the event wouldn’t merit a mention in these pages if food or drink weren’t involved. As it turns out, the match coincides with the NYC Craft Beer Festival. Brewers from all over the state will be on hand with samples of their wares. So will dozens of restaurants, making for a fun, if hectic, day.
The event is limited to 2,500 guests, so lock down your pass early. Tickets, which may be purchased here, range from $55 for general admission up to $125 for a VIP pass.
Governor’s Island is reached via the Governors Island Ferry. Boats leave from the Battery Maritime Building (10 South St.) in Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6. On weekends, the 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. departures from Manhattan are free, with regular $3 rides on the half hour from noon until 5:30 p.m.
