We’ve all heard the story about how John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, was reluctant to put his cards down and so to stave off hunger asked that a slab of meat between two slices of bread be served to him. Legend also has it that another card player, Reuben Kulakofsky, had been dealt a hot hand and instead of leaving the gaming table to grab a bite ordered up a sandwich comprised of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing, grilled between slices of rye bread. Voilà, the Reuben sandwich was born!
Whether either of these stories is true and accurate, humans have been enjoying meats, other proteins, and even veggies encased between slices of bread for millennia. That being said, and today – Nov. 3 – being National Sandwich Day, we thought it appropriate to deal you in on restaurants that are offering specials to commemorate the occasion.
Jersey Mike’s is offering $2 off any regular sub via a coupon available here.
At Lenny’s Subs, the offer is 25% off every sandwich. (I presume the percentage applies to the price, not the sandwich!)
Panera Breadis willing not only to carve $3 off your “rapid pick up” order online (enter the code code RPUBC2 at checkoutbut is extending its largesse through Nov. 6.
Quiznos isn’t saying what they are giving away, having tweeted outonly, “Who’s ready for #NationalSandwichDay? We’re celebrating all day! Tune in tomorrow for toasty giveaways.” The tweet was posted yesterday.
Subway has also reached out via Twitter but at least specifies the offer, which is a free sub with any sub plus drink. The company will also donate a meal to “Feeding America.” Good on them!
