The eight days of Hannukah, aka the Jewish “Festival of Lights,” begin this year on Christmas Day.
As the holiday approaches, I am reminded of the quote often ascribed to Dorothy Parker that observes, “I hate to write, but I love having written.” In my case my disaffection is for cooking latkes, though I confess to love eating the crisp fried potato cakes.
You can imagine my delight, therefore, when I discovered that Kosher food purveyor Manischewitz had come out recently with a line of frozen, ready to heat latkes. The cakes come ten to a package. What that means to the person in your household responsible for latke duty (yo!) is no more endless peeling and grating of potatoes (and knuckles — an occupational hazard of making latkes), no more chopping onions amid a flood of tears. If company drops in during latke service, you just open another package.
Manischewitz frozen, ready to heat latkes are available for $3.99 to $4.99 at Stop & Shop and select Key Foods stores.
