How often has this happened to you? You glimpse a cake on Instagram or YouTube that is a culinary masterpiece. You try to replicate it and end up with egg on your face, not to mention all over your stove, kitchen floor, counters — everywhere.

Face it: Baking is as much science as it is art. That’s why serious bakers measure ingredients by weight rather than volume.

If you are frustrated over your inability to turn out the same kinds of creations the pros do, then Netflix has a show just for you. It’s called “Nailed It!” and it is a celebration of the human side of baking, warts and all.

It’s more than just that. The show is a contest between three amateur bakers who compete to replicate fancy desserts for a prize of $10,000. Oftentimes, contestants will be people who never operated a stand mixer or used a piping bag.

“Nailed It!” also provides a reality sandwich for home bakers by underscoring just how much work goes into those amazing made-for-social media creations.
