When Le Relais de Venise opened its doors at Lexington and 52nd in 1959, it was hailed as something novel — a restaurant that served the lone menu item of steak, fries, and salad to everyone who crossed the threshold. It was also hailed as something of a bargain since said repast was so reasonably priced that the cost today, adjusted several times for inflation, is a mere $34.

Naturally, an idea this eminently imitable has spawned imitators, each seeking to outprice its predecessors. Last September, a Mexican restaurant in Brooklyn by the name of Tiny’s Cantina lowered the limbo stick to $24.95 for skirt steak, fries, and a beer-battered blooming pepper garnish.

Now a new contender emerges. Eater New York reports that the Korean American steakhouse Gui in the Theater District is offering a lunchtime special of steak au poivre, a salad, and bottomless fries, all for the low, low price of $23.
